Le château de Prague fut fondé vers 880 par le prince Bořivoj de la dynastie des Přemyslides. Selon le Livre Guinness des records, le complexe du château, dont la superficie atteint près de 70 000 m², est le plus grand au monde.
Le château se compose d’un vaste ensemble de palais et d’églises de styles architecturaux très variés, incluant des vestiges d’édifices romans du Xe siècle, des remaniements de style gothique du XIVe siècle, des interventions du célèbre architecte slovène Jože Plečnik à l’époque de la Première République tchécoslovaque et de dernières modifications datant de la fin du XXe siècle.
La cathédrale Saint-Guy (Svatého Víta), de son vrai nom cathédrale Saint-Guy, Venceslas et Adalbert, est la plus grande église du pays et une des plus belles cathédrales d’Europe. Située à l’intérieur même de l’enceinte du château de Prague elle trône, fière et tranquille sur une colline. La tour sud (base gothique et toit baroque en forme de bulbe) est haute de 96,6 mètres avec une cloche de 18 tonnes (la plus grosse du pays, il fallut 32 chevaux pour la transporter au château). Une cloche qui ne sonne qu’à de rares occasions solennelles..
