Le gros de Prague fut créé par Wenceslas II (1278-1305), roi de Bohême et de Pologne. Au moment de son émission il vaut 12 pfennigs et s'appelle un "Pragergroschen". Ils sont frappés en Bohême par des artistes italiens que Wenceslas a fait venir. Ces gros sont d'abord imités en Misnie, puis dans toute l'Allemagne. La frappe a dû commencer vers 1280.

Wenceslas II (1271-1305), of the Przemyslides family, is the son of Ottokar II, killed in 1278. King of Bohemia in 1283, he became king of Poland after his marriage to Elisabeth. He is the son-in-law of Jean l'Aveugle, king of Bohemia (1310-1346), killed at the battle of Crécy.
