Cette décoration fut instituée par Léon XIII le 17 juillet pour récompenser les personnes des deux sexes qui avaient montré un dévouement particulier à l’occasion du Jubilé Sacerdotale du Souverain Pontife. Elle a été conservée par la suite tout en prenant une signification plus générale. Elle est destinée à reconnaître les actes de dévouement envers l’Eglise et la Papauté.

This decoration was instituted by Leo XIII on July 17 to reward people of both sexes who had shown particular devotion on the occasion of the Priestly Jubilee of the Supreme Pontiff. It was subsequently retained while taking on a more general meaning. It is intended to recognize acts of devotion to the Church and the Papacy

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - LEO XIII (Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci)
(20/2/1878-20/7/1903)
Of Sienese origin, Leo XIII was nuncio in Brussels, bishop of Perugia, then cardinal from 1853. He became pope on February 20, 1878 following a conclave that lasted only two days. Quite liberal and attentive to the changes of his time, he was a skilful diplomat and reestablished diplomatic relations with Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Russia. On the social level, he denounced the excesses of capitalism and committed himself to defending the workers. He also remains the one who opened up the Vatican archives to researchers..
