Marguerite de France (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 5 juin 1523 - Turin, 15 septembre 1574), était la fille de François Ier, roi de France et de Claude de France, et la sœur de Henri II ; elle fut par son mariage avec Emmanuel-Philibert, duchesse de Savoie.
À la cour de son père, Marguerite se lia d'amitié avec sa tante la reine de Navarre Marguerite et avec Catherine de Médicis, sa belle-sœur, formant avec elles un cercle intellectuel. L'influence de ce milieu lui donna un penchant pour la Réforme, mais elle ne l'assuma jamais.
En dépit de nombreuses propositions qui lui furent faites, ce n'est qu'à l'âge de trente-six ans qu'elle fut mariée à Emmanuel-Philibert de Savoie (1528 † 1580). Plusieurs projets d'alliance avait précédemment avortés. Marguerite fut fiancée jeune avec Maximilien de Habsbourg après la paix de Cambrai. Fin 1538, son père François Ier s'entendit avec Charles Quint pour qu'elle épouse Philippe, futur Philippe II d'Espagne, mais l'entente entre le roi de France et l'empereur fut de courte durée. Peinant à lui trouver un prétendant digne de son rang, Henri II son frère lui attribua pour ses besoins matériels en 1550 le duché de Berry.
Le projet de mariage avec Emmanuel-Philibert est l'une des clauses du traité du Cateau-Cambrésis signé le 3 avril 1559 par la France et l'Espagne. Il fut très décrié par les hommes de guerre français car Marguerite emportait avec elle en dot le Piémont et le duché de Savoie que la France occupait depuis vingt-cinq ans.
Le mariage de Marguerite fut – sans doute – le plus triste qu'on ait jamais vu. Son frère le roi Henri II avait été blessé au cours d'un tournoi célébrant les noces de sa fille Élisabeth. Sur le seuil de la mort mais encore conscient, le roi avait imposé que le mariage se fît tout de suite, par peur que le duc de Savoie ne profitât de sa mort pour refuser l'alliance. Il meurt le lendemain.
Marguerite quitta la cour de France à la fin de l'année et rejoignit son mari dont elle eut un fils, Charles Emmanuel Ier (1562 - 1630). Elle joua un rôle d'intermédiaire entre Catherine de Médicis et le duc de Savoie et fut mêlée aux négociations touchant la restitution des dernières places fortes tenues par les Français en Italie..
