Napoleon I (1768-1821) was at the height of his power in 1809 but Pope Pius VII excommunicated him on June 12. In response, the emperor had the sovereign pontiff removed and interned on July 6. On April 22, it is the formation of the fifth coalition and a lightning campaign of Napoleon in Austria with the victories of Eckmühl, Essling and especially Wagram (July 6).
