Salles se trouve dans l’arrondissement de Rochefort, au sud de La Rochelle. La toponymie rapporte l’origine de salines qui existaient depuis l’Antiquité. Salles-sur-mer compte toujours aujourd’hui un ruisseau qui se jette dans la mer à Saint-Jean-des-Sables, entre Châtelaillon et Angoulins. Les marais forment aujourd’hui la réserve naturelle du marais d’Yves. L'actuelle Châtelaillon tire son origine d’une puissante forteresse qui comptait quatorze tours, sise sur un promontoire dominant la mer et les marais.
Ce rare jeton témoigne des travaux d’assèchement de la région au milieu du XIXe siècle.

Salles-sur-mer still has a stream that flows into the sea at Saint-Jean-des-Sables, between Châtelaillon and Angoulins. The marshes today form the Marais d'Yves nature reserve. The present-day Châtelaillon has its origins in a powerful fortress with fourteen towers, located on a promontory overlooking the sea and the marshes. This rare token testifies to the drainage work in the region in the mid-19th century.

AUNIS AND LA ROCHELLE
Between Poitou and Saintonge, Aunis has La Rochelle as its capital and also includes the towns of Brouage and Rochefort. Possession of the Plantagenets, it was taken in 1224 then lost during the Treaty of Brétigny (1360). Aunis revolts shortly after and gives itself to King Charles V. It is one of the bastions of Protestantism in the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century until the capture of La Rochelle in 1628.
